Title: Mentoring the Next Generation Science Teacher: Supporting New Science Teachers Through Community & Collaboration
Conference: National Science Teaching Association National Conference, Boston, MA 2020
Abstract: In an educational climate of increasing pressure and accountability, retaining and renewing science teachers can be especially challenging. The demand for instructional excellence continues to grow. This challenge is especially difficult for new teachers who must not only learn to manage students and design effective lessons, but also integrate content with the most essential elements of engineering, mathematics, technology, and scientific literacy. This session is intended to provide practical strategies for teacher mentors, supervisors of instruction, and building level administrators in assisting new teachers in developing and acquiring the skills of a highly effective science teacher. Unique challenges of the mentor and new teacher will be identified and discussed. Practical tips for mentoring and fostering a culture of community and collaboration between new teachers and their colleagues will be shared.
