Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
What is FMLA? The Family and Medical Leave Act is a federal law that entitles eligible employees to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and personal medical reasons with continuation of group health insurance coverage under the same terms and conditions as if the employee had not taken leave. Generally, leave is up to a total of 12 weeks in a 12 month period. Types of unpaid leave include:
- A serious health condition that makes the employee unable to perform the essentials of his or her job
- A serious health condition of a spouse, child, or parent
- To care for a child after birth, adoption, or the placement of a child all within one year

New Jersey Family Leave Act (FLA)
What is FLA? The New Jersey Family Leave Act is a state law that entitles eligible employees to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family reasons with continuation of group health insurance coverage under the same terms and conditions as if the employee had not taken leave. Generally, leave is up to a total of 12 weeks in a 24 month period. Types of unpaid leave include:
- To care for a child after birth, adoption, or the placement of the child all within one year
- To care for a spouse, child, or parent with a serious health condition
