![]() Welcome to Betsy Ross Elementary School
Describing her "best memory" of Betsy Ross School, a second grader wrote in her yearbook, "I love my cozy school." This is a sentiment shared by many children and parents as they begin their first journey through school at Betsy Ross. Betsy Ross School is a charming, old-fashioned stone and brick suburban neighborhood school with a recent addition of ten new classrooms. The school houses four half-day kindergartens, five first grades, four second grades and four third classes. The growth of the primary child academically, socially, and physically is emphasized as a means of developing self-esteem and academic excellence. The acquisition of reading, computational and writing skills is a priority. Children are instructed using a balanced literacy program that combines phonics instruction and guided reading. All classrooms house at least three computers which are used daily by students in various areas of the curriculum. The Library/Media Center is the hub of the school, providing instruction in research and computer technology skills as well as the development of lifelong readers. Students have supervised Internet access through the Library/Media Center and all classrooms. Special services include reading, mathematics, speech, English as a Second Language, and a Resource Room for developmentally delayed students. Art, music, physical education and library instruction are also part of the comprehensive educational program geared to the special needs of primary age children. Betsy Ross houses a Nature Center with a pond, bird feeding stations and a butterfly garden. The NBC Weathernet provides the opportunity for students to forecast the weather from our own weather station. Both of these features are used for hands-on science coordinated with the science curriculum. A school-wide initiative to develop character and citizenship has been implemented with daily and monthly activities for all students. This successful program teaches children to value honesty, responsibility, respect and actively teaches caring for one another. The entire school community begins each day together with a recitation of the Betsy Ross School pledge. "I am a citizen of the Betsy Ross School. I will do my best to treat others with kindness and respect and follow the school rules." After-school enrichment is offered to first, second and third graders with enrichment themes varying from year to year. The science curriculum is supplemented by a building-wide Science Fair in April and a third grade Astronomy Night in October. Patriotism is alive and well at Betsy Ross School. Color Day, with students and staff wearing red, white and blue, is held once monthly. Each class assumes the responsibility of leading opening exercises on Color Day by presenting a patriotic program. Parents are an integral part of Betsy Ross School. The Home and School Organization annually sponsors a Walkathon, Field Day, assembly programs and field trips. A Family Night is held each spring to feature samples of student work completed throughout the year. The staff is a close-knit family of dedicated professionals providing a nurturing school environment. This "home away from home" is a safe, educationally rich atmosphere is which students grow and learn. |
